Match Report, U11s Alveston 0v3 Stratford Town 3 Apr 2011

Alveston lost their local derby semi-final to Stratford Town 3-0. Stratford set their stall out from the outset, playing with 4 defenders and 5 midfield players, leaving their striker to fight it out on his own upfront. This led to a very congested midfield area, and the home side found it difficult to find any space to get their passing game going. The ball spent far too much time in the air, and despite the result Stratford never actually got into the home team's penalty area! Alveston did try to force the pace and won a number of corners, one of which went to the far post where Alan Mackinnon's shot was blocked on the line. Matty Rickett then hit a free-kick which came back off the bar with the keeper beaten.

Stratford started the second half brightly as Ben Couki drove at the home defence and won a free kick, which Dillon Parker drove wide. The game changed when after a spell of good pressure from Alveston, the ball was cleared to Henry Grisenthwaite whose first time shot flew into the top corner. The home side responded well as Josh Humphriss' shot was deflected wide, but the wind was taken out of their sales when Dillon Parker struck a 20 yard free kick over the head of Isaac Downes and into the net. Parker added a third just before the end when he struck another free kick past the helpless keeper.            

Match Report: Alveston 5v0 Coventry Jaguar – 20 March 2011

Alveston continued their good run with a comfortable 5-0 win against Coventry Jaguar. Harry Coleman and Julian Thomas started for the first time upfront, and gave the home defence a torrid afternoon. On a firm pitch the Alveston players first touch was impressive, and it didn't take long for Matty Rickett to play a delightful ball over to top for Thomas to run onto and fire just over the bar. A goal was inevitable and it was Matty Rickett who opened the scoring with a rasping drive from a free kick, which the keeper could only help push into the roof of the net.

Thomas then shot wide when put through by Josh Humphriss, as Alveston dominated possession, and his persistence paid off when he drove the ball into the bottom corner after another through ball by the impressive Rickett. The second half continued as the first with Alveston in total control, and they soon increased their lead when Thomas finished well from a Billy Dingley through ball. Any time the ball went into Alveston's half the back three of Foley, Connor & Mackinnon dealt with any danger and often started their attacking moves. Alveston's fourth came from another well struck Rickett free kick from 25 yards after a foul on Coleman, and they rounded off their win when the industrious Jamie Stephens was first to react to a loose ball, and fire home after the keeper failed to hold a well struck shot from Josh Humphriss.

Alveston 2v1 Chapelfields Colts 13 March 2011

Alveston picked up a hard earned 3 points with a 2-1 win over Chapelfield Colts on Sunday. The home side dominated possession, and when a superb left foot strike from Jamie Stephens from the edge of the area flew into the top corner of the net, it seemed inevitable that the floodgates would open. Joe Vose was causing all sorts of problems down right and delivered a number of inviting crosses, which somehow either eluded Stephens & Spencer, or some desperate defending managed to keep the ball out.

The Alveston defence looked much better, with Joey Barnish controlling the back line, although an unfortunate mix up allowed Chapelfields in for their equaliser with their only attack of the half. Alveston continued to press, Matty Rickett went close with a rasping free kick, and Alan Mackinnon was unlucky to see his volley deflected wide with the keeper beaten.

The second half started in the same way, which the home side applying all the pressure, and they duly got their reward, when some neat passing found Josh Humphriss on the edge of the area, and his first time pass found the angled run of Stephens who made no mistake, driving the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the net. Another drive from Rickett’s flew just over and Stephens just missed out on a hat-trick when he couldn’t quite get on the end of a Humphriss cross.

Alveston almost paid for their failure to finish the game off, and with only a few minutes remaining chapelfields threw men forward, and it took a wonderful last ditch tackle from the impressive Roshen Foley and a brave save from keeper Isaac Downes to maintain their advantage.

Alveston 6v3 Coventrians Knock Out Cup - Sunday 6 March 2011

Alveston under 11's got back to winning ways with a 6-3 victory over Coventrians in the quarter final of the knockout cup. The big pitch suited Alveston and they passed the ball with purpose, opening up the home defence on numerous occasions. Harry Spencer & Jamie Stephens movement was superb and both went close to opening the scoring. It was therefore a surprise when the home side took the lead. From a long ball, some slack marking at the back allowed the striker to run through and score. 

Alveston's response was magnificent. Joe Vose was released by Matty Rickett but shot wide, and after further chances went begging they finally got their reward when from a corner Harry Spencer was first to react to tap the ball home. Alveston again lost concentration at the back and were duly punished, but again they bounced back, a superb through ball by Alan Mackinnon released Harry Spencer who coolly slotted past the advancing keeper. 

Jamie Stephens then converted another flowing Alveston move involving the outstanding Billy Dingley, Jordon Pace and Alan Mackinnon. The second half continued as the first with Alveston dominating possession. Joe Vose was a constant threat down the right and it was his pass that released Spencer, who lifted the ball over the advancing keeper for his hat-trick. Jamie Stephens extended their lead when he was on hand to tap in from a Vose cross. The home side threw more players forward and got another goal, but Vose wrapped the game up when he finally got the goal he deserved after being released by Roshen Foley.

Alveston 2v5 Mount Nod - 13 February 2011

Alveston U11's crashed to a disappointing 5-2 defeat at title rivals Mount Nod. In difficult conditions it was Alveston who started more confidently, with Alex Connor a threat down the left and Harry Spencer probing through the middle as they started to create chances. Alveston took the lead when Joe Vose released Roshen Foley down the right and his cross was met by Alex connor who finished with aplomb. Alveston suffered a blow when their top scorer Josh Humphriss had to go off injured.  

The game remained close until a 5 minute spell mid way through the first half decided the game. Mount Nod's equaliser came when a free kick was headed on from the edge of the area and somehow found it's way into the roof of the net. This seamed to knock Alveston's confidence and within a minute a hopeful shot from the left hand corner of the area managed to squirm under the body of Isaac Downes and crept in at the near post.

Alveston fell further behind before responding with a well struck Billy Dingley shot from the edge of the area. However, more sloppy work at the back handed the home team their fourth. Alveston started the second half well and put the home defence under pressure. The introduction of Alan Mackinnon created a threat down the right as he put in some crunching tackles, which seemed to galvanise the players. On one of the few occasions they got the ball down, they opened up the home defence, Alan Mackinnon played the ball inside to Alex Connor who delivered a sublime ball through to Joe Vose, who cooley slotted the ball past the advancing keeper. The home side killed the game off isaac downes could only palm a speculative shot into the net.   

Alveston 1v1 Santos Youth (3v1 Penalties) 6 Feb 2011

Alveston U11's progressed into the quarter finals of the knockout cup, winning a penalty shootout 3-1 against a spirited Santos Youth team.

In a scrappy game Alveston struggled to get to grips with the blustery conditions, and never really got their passing game going, which benefited the team from a division below. Santos competed for every ball and deservedly took the lead when a mix up in the home defence between Isaac Downes & Dan Malone allowed Josh Dixon to steal in and prod the ball into an empty net. 

Alveston responded immediately, and Julian Thomas held the ball up well to release Alan Mackinnon down the left hand side, his cross found Josh Humphriss who's shot was parried by the keeper and Joe Vose lobbed wide. Alveston were soon level when the industrious Matty Rickett won the ball in the middle of the park before threading a delightful ball for Josh Humphriss, who made no mistake with his finish, smashing the ball into the roof of the net.

The second half continued to be scrappy, with neither team able to create any real openings. Alex Connor was superb at the heart of the home defence, marshalling his players well and snuffing out any danger, whilst at the other end Roshen Foley & Jamie Stevens both went close. 

Alveston were unlucky not to wrap the game up in extra time, when Josh Humphriss hit an unstoppable shot from the edge of the area, which cannoned back off the crossbar, and did the same again only minutes later.

With the score level after extra time it was down to penalties. All the players from both sides who stepped forward and volunteered to take a penalty deserve an enormous amount of credit, and on this occasion it was Alveston who came out on top 3-1, with successful penalties from Roshen Foley, Alex Connor & Harry Coleman.

Alveston 8v0 Brinklow 21 November 2010

Alveston produced another win away from home sending them to the top of the table. Next week it's Chapelfields Colts, also away from home.

Alveston Juniors under 11s continued their impressive run with an 8-0 hammering of Brinklow. Alveston's greatest scare of the day came when Alan Mackinnon collided with one of the goal posts in the warm up, which left him with concussion. He was going to deputise in goal for the injured Isaac Downes, but after another re-shuffle Matty Rickett took over in goal.

 

It was a testament to the teams spirit and resolve that they came out all guns blazing, and were soon ahead when Josh Humphriss collected the ball just outside the area, left two defenders for dead before hammering the ball into the roof of the net. Billy Dingley, Roshen Foley and Joey Barnish were controlling the midfield playing some delightful football, as Alveston continued to press. Alex Connor's fine run down the left resulted in a corner, from which Jamie Stephens was first to react to steer the ball home.

 

The score could have been in double figures by half time but from some desperate defending from the home side. Joe Vose and Dan Malone linked up well down the right, with the former sending in some terrific crosses. After more fine work down the right, Joe Vose sent in another cross for Josh Humphriss to slot past the keeper. A Jake Greaves diving header went just wide and Roshen Foley went close with a volley as Alveston continued to dominate.

 

Jamie Stephens got his second, and the team's fourth, when from a cross from Alex Connor found him at the far post, from where he made no mistake. Alveston got their fifth just before half time from another corner, when the ball was half cleared it fell to Joey Barnish, who capped a tremendous debut by lobbing the keeper from the edge of the area.

 

Alveston changed their keeper at half time, with Jake Greaves taking over in goal, and the second half continued as the first. Josh Humphriss claimed his hat trick when he rounded off a fine move, involving Roshen Foley, Matty Rickett & Billy Dingley which tore the home defence apart, leaving Josh to coolly slot the ball past the advancing keeper.

 

The tireless Joe Vose was tormenting the home defence with his mazy runs, and it was from his run and cross that Harry Coleman, who timed his run to perfection, got ahead of the defence to calmly slot the ball into the corner of the net for their seventh. Jordon Pace linked up well with Harry Spencer down the left, and from the result of some good work between the pair, Harry Spencer delivered a sublime cross to set up Matty Rickett to fire home for the eighth.    

Alveston 3v1 Coventry Sphinx U11s Sunday 14 November 10

Alveston returned to Coventry Sphinx and avenged last month’s league defeat with a well deserved 3-1 victory in the 2nd round of the Knock-out League Cup. A determined gritty attitude was evident right from the very beginning as Alveston grabbed an early initiative when Josh Humphries was able to send a fiery cross into the Sphinx box that was turned onto the post by the keeper and then poked over the line by an alert Jamie Stephens. 

Whilst every Alveston player displayed a desire to chase and close down their opponents, the key accolades would surely go to the back line of Dan Malone Jake Greaves and Jordan Pace who worked tirelessly to protect GK Isaac Downes from being tested. With the score at 1-0 Greaves and Pace could both lay claim to some important covering and interceptions and with the bold unflinching tackling of Malone the script was set for Alveston to push forward and look for a 2nd.

This duly came when Humphries again found room on the right flank and fired a screaming shot high and across the keeper into the far corner and at this point Sphinx looked beaten and disconsolate. Alex Connor began to find room on the left wing was able to stretch the defence with a some penetrating weaving runs but this endeavour went un rewarded first when Humphries screwed the pull back just wide and when Connor himself just failed to connect after some neat interplay in the penalty area.

As expected Sphinx brought more determination to the 2nd half and the game sunk into a muddy competitive mire in the middle of the park. This meant the midfield trio of Mattie Rickett, Roshen Foley and Billy Dingley had to labour hard but to their credit they sustained themselves against some crunching tackles and held the resurgent Sphinx to a stalemate. Up front Harry Spencer and Alan Mackinnon chased down every ball over the top and Sphinx found they could not settle. 

It came as somewhat surprising that with the last quarter of the game to go Sphinx were able to capitalise on a speculative ball over the defence and make the score 2-1. However Alveston’s heads never dropped. Joe Vose pushed further up the right flank to assist Humphries and Mackinnon pushed on higher up the left and it looked like Spencer would surely profit from one of these sources but the ball just never broke kindly. 

However, as the tension began to grow Mattie Rickett was to secure the game when he seized upon a poor clearance to send his hot souring over the keeper and into the net. Sphinx then came again but Alveston's tenacious defending  was underlined when Pace headed off the line. Alveston then pushed forward for a 4th goal and this looked likely when first Spencer went close after Vose drove hard into the penalty area and again when Mackinnon just failed to get his cross through to an unmarked Harry Coleman . For all this though Alveston’s tenacity and concentration was summed up when the mainly untested GK Isaac Downes was able to crown a thoroughly satisfying team performance to produce a fabulous diving save in the dying minutes to thwart the Sphinx centre forward. 

Alveston 4v1 Stratford Colts 7 Nov 2010 - Match Report

Alveston took the spoils in this eagerly awaited derby game by beating Stratford Town 4-1 at the NFU . Straight from kick off old rivalries were very apparent as the game immediately picked up to a tempo but it was Alveston who were the more comfortable and were unlucky not to take the lead on two occasions, first when from a corner Roshen Foley just failed to direct his strong header on target and then when Harry Spencer shot just wide after finding space in the penalty area. 

However, despite this promising start the game at 0-0 remained tightly contested and indeed if not for a key interception by Jake Greaves at centre back and then two diving saves by Isaac Downes at the feet of the incoming centre forward Alveston could have gone behind . Alveston’s endeavour proved to be key though and when Stratford failed to clear their lines from a corner Billy Dingley was first on hand to take advantage and lash the ball from close range high into the net to give Alveston the luxury of a 1-0 lead at half time.

Alveston started the 2nd half as they had the 1st seeking to apply early pressure and this was rewarded within the first couple of mins when Jamie Stephens raced onto an early ball over the top by Mattie Ricketts to drive the home. Stratford then responded well to this disappointment applying their own pressure but perhaps the turning point in the game came in two vital minutes when Jordan Pace was on hand to clear off the line, to then see Josh Humphries win a corner at the other end which the resulted in Alan Mackinnon reacting to confusion in the 6 yard box to steer home. 

At 3-0 the game now looked to be won. Any chance of Stratford getting near goal was consistently defended. When the ball evaded the Alveston midfield both Greaves and Dan Malone were on hand to provide some fierce competitive tackling and as a consequence Alveston looked comfortable pursuing a 4th This duly came when Stephens’ ball over the top released Humphries who calmly fired past the keeper and this gave Alveston the privilege or being able to look for more without fear.

First Alex Connor’s weaving run was denied by the keeper and Harry Coleman saw his long range shot go just wide. Joe Vose introduced on the wing  consistently made good progress down the flank keeping the right back busy but against the run of play Alveston conceded when lack of concentration enabled Stratford to profit from a corner. However, this was of little consequence and Alveston gladly finished the game as winners.

Alveston beat Firefighters 2-0 at home to move through the 2nd round of the KO Cup. In a progressively competitive but scruffy affair the visitors set their stall out with a deep defensive but resolute line that Alveston found difficult to penetrate.

In the 1st half goal keeper Isaac Downes was never troubled and shielded by the effective defensive partnership of Jake Greaves and Jordan Pace Alveston were afforded the luxury of being able to concentrate on going forward. However the midfield the trio of Billy Dingley, Mattie Ricketts and Roshen Foley were more often crowded out and struggled to find Alex Connor and Joe Vose waiting out on the wings. As the game began to get bogged down Alveston were beginning to reflect on just one long range shot from Mattie Ricketts and a toe over the bar from Jamie Stephens , but two goals in the space of 5 mins looked set to change the complexion of the game.

First from the right hand wing Alveston looked to have been frustrated once more as the tireless work of Ricketts, Stephens and Alan Mackinnon as once again stifled by sheer defensive numbers. However when the ball fell conveniently to Vose he was able to shoot hard and low from 12 yards across the keeper to see his shot nestle in the bottom corner of the net. Within 4 mins Alveston doubled their lead when Harry Spencer was able to chase down a ball over the top from Dingley then cut into the penalty area and curl his shot beyond the keeper’s outstretched hand into the corner. It was hoped by the home supporters that this would light the touch paper for more goals but to Firefighters’ credit they maintained their focus and saw the half out.

The flavour of the 2nd half was much the same as the first. Dan Malone was introduced into defence and his competitive tackling approach underlined Alveston's tight defensive line . Once more the home team pressed hard trying to create a clear cut chance in front of goal but the weight of numbers and last ditched clearances kept the home team at bay. Against all this Harry Coleman was still able to make some room for himself on the edge of the penalty area but then shot just wide. Minutes later Josh Humphries was able to seize upon a pass by Connor but the keeper was alert enough to palm his shot on to the post . Inevitably the game moved towards a competitive stalemate and Alveston's frustration in search of an elusive 3rd goal was summed up in the closing minutes when Humphries was just unable to connect when given a clear site of goal.. This was of no matter though as Alveston through hard endeavour and two early goals had made it through to the next round.

Alveston Juniors are at Home to Firefighters on Sunday 10 October 2010. Fire Fighters play at The Woodlands School in Broad Lane, Coventry which is Eastern Green. So far this season, Firefighters have played three league games (a win, a draw and a loss) in Division C which sees them in sixth place.

Alveston 4v1 Southam 2 Oct 2010 - Match Report

Alveston under 11's produced an outstanding display away at Southam to claim all three points, with a well deserved 4-1 win. In difficult conditions, and with the wind at their backs, it was the home side who started strongly, but with Isaac Downes in commanding form in goal, and Jake Greaves, Jordon Pace and Dan Malone all superb at the back, not only putting in some crunching tackles, but also looking to play the ball to feet wherever possible, they provided Alveston with a platform to build from. It was from such a move that Alveston created their first chance of the game, when good link up play between Dan Malone, Jamie Stephens & Matty Rickett released Alan Mackinnon down the right hand side, and his cross found the on-rushing Billy Dingley who fired wide. 

Josh Humphriss and Jamie Stephens were causing all sorts of problems for the home defence, and when Alex Connor played a delightful ball into the path of Josh on the left hand side of the box, Luke Hurst had to be at his best to keep the shot out. However, he could do nothing to prevent Alveston taking the lead, when a free kick from Matty Rickett found Josh Humphriss just inside the area, who's sublime first touch turned the defender before he unleashed an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net. 

After the break it was the home side who started well, and were soon level when the referee awarded a penalty when he felt Jamie Ford was upended in the box. Connor Bowmaster calmly firing into the the bottom right hand corner, leaving Isaac Downes with no chance. Alveston responded brilliantly, with Matty Rickett, Billy Dingley and Roshen Foley taking control of the centre of the midfield and orchestrating all their attacks, and it wasn't long before they re-took the lead, when from some good work down the left by Joe Vose and Jordon Pace set up Josh Humphriss, who from the left hand edge of the area, curled a superb shot into the far corner of the net. 

Alveston continued to press, harrying every Southam player with the ball and forcing them into errors. Some good interplay between Matty Rickett, Billy Dingley & Roshen Foley forced the southam midfield into some desperate lunges, and from one of these Alveston were awarded a free kick some 25 yards out. From this distance, you would normally expect the ball to be clipped into the box, however, Josh Humphriss claimed his hat-trick when he unleashed a thunderbolt of a free kick, which flew into the top corner of the net, leaving the home keeper, Luke Hurst, rooted to the spot. 

It was all Alveston now, with Alan Mackinnon, Jamie Stephens and Matty Rickett all going close. With only 5 minutes remaining another well worked move down the Alveston right, involving the impressive Jamie Stephens, set Josh Humphriss away and when his cross was fumbled by the home keeper, Harry Spencer was on hand to guide the ball into an empty net.

Alveston Juniors 7v1 Whitley Juniors Match Report 26 September 2010

Alveston underlined their true football credentials with an emphatic 7-1 home victory against Whitley Juniors. The match begun in predictable fashion with both teams competing strongly for possession  but it was Alveston who could have taken an early lead when Roshen Foley's  fierce strike from an Alan Mackinnon cross was parried by the keeper. From a defensive perspective Alveston looked assured. Dan Malone and Jordan Pace were successful with a number of strong tackles that prevented Whitley making any progress down the flanks and once again Jake Greaves put in a commanding performance in the middle,  winning decisive headers at will. 

Despite this pleasing solidity Whitley could have gone ahead had it not been for the alertness of Goalkeeper  Isaac Downes who was quick off his line to dive bravely at the forward's feet and deny a clear shooting chance. But in the 1st half exchanges this was all Whitley really had to offer and the Alveston attacking line sensing this pressed forward. First Billy Dingley was unlucky not to score after running direct at the defensive line only to see his firm shot well saved and  number of half chances created from the right hand side by the weaving runs of Jamie Stephens came to nothing.  However it was third time lucky for Stephens as he managed to evade  tackle after tackle to cross and  Foley gladly  smashed home. 

Surprisingly Alveston surrendered this lead almost immediately when a defensive mix  gifted the ball to the Whitley centre forward who took his chance well. It was to Alveston's credit though that they bounced back from this merely seconds later. Stephens again displaying some deftly control  was able to make a penetrating run down the right and when his near post shot was spilled onto the post by the keeper,  Alex Connor was keenly on hand to score from the follow up.  Very shortly after this Whitley seemed to lose all organisation. Mattie Ricketts found more room than ever and was unlucky not to score on two occasions when his shots narrowly missed. But this was of no matter .When  Mackinnon as able to gain possession and gain a corner , Stephens was on hand to drive high into the net to take the score to 3-1.  The game was effectively over when  Connor made it 4-1  after he was able to profit from the endeavours of Stephens  and Foley in the box and drove hard and low past the keeper and when  Josh Humphries stepped up to take a free kick  that evaded the  defensive wall and hit the net before the keeper had chance to move it seemed the game would offer more goals in the 2nd half.

In the 2nd half. Whitley to their  own credit tried to take the game to Alveston and there were a number of goalmouth scrambles to underlined that this game was not as easy as the score line suggested .But Alveston stuck firmly to their task and on a number of occasions Mackinnon, Dingley and Humphries were able to break free down the right  only to see  their crosses keenly intercepted.  A very industrious Harry Spencer was thwarted every time he made space for himself in the penalty box and debutant Joe Vose was also unlucky  that the ball didn't fall kindlier for him on the left hand side when he made his runs into the box. When the Whitley keeper was able to dramatically save from an incoming Rickett's from 6 yards it seemed the scoreline would stay  5-1.  However in the last 5 mins Alveston were able to add two more goals to their tally when Stephens  was able to scoop the ball over the keeper from 8 yards  for a richly deserved 2nd. In the last minute of the game the Whitley defender turned the ball into his own net from a Rickett's corner. At 7-1 the game was complete and a deserved victory recorded.

Division A - Results after Game Two (for some teams)

Following on from the Wednesday night fixtures, no team has yet played two and won two.

Coundon Court who visit Alveston on this Sunday lost 2-3 to a visiting Southam United Minors. That leaves Mount Nod and Stratford at the top and Whitley Juniors yet to play a game.

Finally, Coventry Jaguar Youth record the highest goals scored of the season with seven and unfortunately it's two games, two losses for Chapelfields Colts and Coventry Copsewood Junior.

Alveston U11s began the new season with a 2-1 win over Coventry Copsewood

Alveston U11s got their season off to a winning start, with a hard fought 2-1 win over Coventry Copsewood. In their first ever game both at 11-a-side and in the First Division of the Coventry League, Alveston started brightly and were soon ahead when a through ball from Roshen Foley sent his striking partner Harry Spencer in on goal, and he coolly slotted the ball under the advancing keeper. 

Copsewood responded strongly, and it took a superb covering tackle from Alex Connor to keep the home team ahead. Alveston struggled to get their passing game going, and were soon punished when from a long ball their defence was caught square and Luke Strong netted. The goal unsettled Alveston, and they were thankful to their defence of Alex Connor, Jake Greaves and Jordon Pace as well as keeper Isaac Downes, that they went in level at halft ime. 

The second half saw a much improved Alveston side as they came to terms with the pace and physicality of the game. Billy Dingley and Matty Rickett started to control the midfield, feeding Josh Humphriss who crested havoc and panic in the Copsewood defence. 

Alan Mackinnon put in some crunching tackles and Jamie Stephens continued to probe down the left-hand side. The home side were now creating all the chances. Dingley split the defence with an exquisite pass which Humphriss only just failed to convert and Aaron Taplin delivered a great cross from the right which Spencer worked the keeper. 

However, it wasn’t long before their dominance paid off. Matty Rickett found Humphriss on the left hand side of the area, and he cut inside before firing an unstoppable shot into the far corner.
